Marguerite Patten, OBE I recall my mother saying with great regularity ‘let’s have fish today, it is so good for the brain’. She was almost right – in those days we did not know that while all fish are good sources of protein it’s oily fish that supplies our bodies with essential Omega-3. Recently Omega-3 has been shown to help the brain develop in infancy, and thus may aid concentration and even memory. I became a mother during the war period when expectant mothers and young children were issued with free cod-liver oil to help maintain health during the rationing years. My daughter and I both recall having our spoonfuls of the fish oil each day. It was a wonderful supplement for our health but not so wonderful for our taste-buds! Thankfully today there are easy to chew capsules, with the same health giving properties, that children will enjoy.
